“S” Singer - (In 1920’s or early 1930’s), at the Court Street Y.M.C.A., in Newark, NJ, a man by the name of Ernest B. Henry, was named Chairman and was also on the Board of Directors.    In time he opened a music department for youths in order to teach them how to read music, play instruments and sing.

Interestingly, a young 14 year old female, by the name of Sarah Vaughn, came to learn how to sing.    Mr. Henry (my grandfather), was instrumental in helping her learn the art of music, initiated or developed a solid foundation and also fundamentals.

In time, Ernest opened up the first supper clubs, owned by a Caribbean.  It was named “The Silver and Blue” and also “The Nest.”  Both clubs were located on Warren Street in Newark.  Many musicians got their first opportunities to perform.  Also, many continued on to New York as well as other places of prominence.

Lastly, at her request, Sarah Vaughn is interred at a gravesite just a few yards away from Ernest B. Henry.  This gravesite is located at the Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield, NJ.
