“S” Singer - (In 1920’s or early 1930’s), at the Court Street Y.M.C.A., in Newark, NJ, a man by the name of Ernest B. Henry, was named Chairman and was also on the Board of Directors.    In time he opened a music department for youths in order to teach them how to read music, play instruments and sing.

Interestingly, a young 14 year old female, by the name of Sarah Vaughn, came to learn how to sing.    Mr. Henry (my grandfather), was instrumental in helping her learn the art of music, initiated or developed a solid foundation and also fundamentals.

In time, Ernest opened up the first supper clubs, owned by a Caribbean.  It was named “The Silver and Blue” and also “The Nest.”  Both clubs were located on Warren Street in Newark.  Many musicians got their first opportunities to perform.  Also, many continued on to New York as well as other places of prominence.

Lastly, at her request, Sarah Vaughn is interred at a gravesite just a few yards away from Ernest B. Henry.  This gravesite is located at the Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield, NJ.

A is for Architecture

While sitting in my car, and waiting to talk to persons who were interested in the Bible, I noticed an unfamiliar building that was across the street.  It was annexed to a building which I considered to be a school, and birds were delighting sitting on the cross that was firmly affixed to the roof.

Across from this structure was a building that I construed to be an apartment dwelling and/or a commercial site.  It had lots of varied shape windows in the back.  I wondered why hexagonal shaped windows loomed the rear as well as circular and square shaped objects.

I telephoned my brother who advised me that Newark has a great heritage for architecture.  During the 19 and 20th centuries, immigrants from Italy, Poland and Germany brought with them their architectural designs.  I want to venture on this journey, and also to my surprise, and delight, right then I started on my journey or venture of assessing architectural dwellings in Newark, NJ.

Astronomy

How I do love astronomy!  On the first day of my astronomy class, the professor kept saying to the class, “Be happy, you are like the stars!  I wondered why he kept repeating this statement over and over.  Reluctantly, I asked, “what do you mean by this….and how are we like the stars?”  He said that we humans are closed linked to the stars.  Like us, they are born, grow into toddlers, then children, teenagers, young adults, adults, and then grow old.  They even have a place where after they die they are buried, and even have a cemetery.  AND, if another star hits them while in their burial place, the star is resurrected!  I kept thinking about what he said over and over in my brain.

I love the universe and also the galaxies.  While we live in the Milky Way Galaxy, we cannot perceive how many galaxies there are outside of ours.   We should all humbly admit that we are puny in contrast to the universe and should want to know and serve the creator of such.  It is for this reason that I called my blog, Gail’s Galaxy!
